Step 1: Identifying where to go

For me the most of the difficult steps when planning a vacation is where to go. I remember many a conversations where i keep telling my friends and family how i want to visit many places including South America (Machu Pichu being the Place on the top) or New Zealand or Spain but when it actually comes to planning a vacation to any of these places so many constraints come in mind. Keep the constraints in mind before finalizing the vacation.

Below is the list of constraints and how to tackle them
Duration of Travel - The destination should be chosen based on duration you want to travel to. If you are limited by number of days (Office constraining the same) stick to destinations which are close by and do not require flying/travel time of over 8 - 10 hours to destination.

A chart of ideal travel time i thought appropriate is not less than 1 week for South East Asia and other parts of Asia connected with direct flights, Middle East, Western Europe and some part of Eastern Europe which is easily accessible. Much more time must be given for travel to Eastern Europe which is difficult to access. Ideally 2 weeks for travel to USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, South America (maybe more like 2.5 weeks to 3 weeks), Africa (not best connections available).

The next thing to check is weather and whether the time of travel and weather conditions are what you want to visit in. E.g. Greek Islands shut down in winters, so if you are ok with going skiing in Greece then be all means go ahead in winters.

Last but not least check out the local holiday time in the country of visit. If the time of your visit coincides with local vacations everything would be crowded and very expensive. Best to check out in advance

If all the above is in order then go ahead and start planning the trip.

Bon Voyage
